About Holly

The facts

I was born Dec 12, 1980. I grew up mainly in the Sacramento, CA area, but lived in Livermore, CA during my high school years.

My parents divorced in high school, and my mom moved back to the Sacramento area, where she still lives. My dad ended up in Alabama with his girlfriend, and my half brother, Kevin. My youngest full brother, Joe, is an Engineer and owns a house with his wife in the Sacramento area. Our middle brother, Chad, lives in Sacramento with his girlfriend.

I moved around a bit recently, finally settling in Hayward, CA. I lived in Santa Rosa for 7 years while I was married, moved to Vacaville after getting divorced, and relocated to the East Bay for my current job.

School & Career

The first time around, I graduated from University of California, Davis in June 2003. I have a BS in computer science. This does not mean I can fix a computer, nor build one, but that I know some easy HTML and can whip up a simple program or two. What I did learn in college that time is that I don’t want a computer science job, which corresponds nicely with the lack of jobs in that field.  So after accruing a lot of student loan debt and arguably wasting a lot of time, I ended up working full time for a brokerage firm, in a position I held part time before graduation. I was good at the job, but bored out of my mind.

I did some soul searching in the years after graduation, looking at my hobbies and interests, in order to try and figure out what other career path I might want to explore. And in light of my significant weightloss in the past several years, coupled with my desire to help others and educate people on healthy habits, I decided I wanted to become a dietitian and help obese people for a living.

So I made that dream a reality! I completed my degree at Eastern Michigan University in 2009. I didn’t go live there – they have an excellent online program for dietetics. I began the program in Fall 2007 (after taking prerequisites for 2 years), and I graduated in Spring 2009 with my 2nd bachelor’s degree. I then took the registered dietitian exam issued by the American Dietetic Association on July 27, 2009….and passed.

I am now Holly Haley, R.D.!

I currently work full time as a Registered Dietitian in a nursing home in Alameda, CA.

Hobbies

I’m a runner and triathlete and spend a lot of time working out, and I coach for Go WOW! Team. I’ve also previously been a volunteer coach for several Fleet Feet stores, Girls on the Run and Jill B. Nimble. I spend hours on the internet and Livejournal, I love cheesy TV shows, and I’m still working on my own weightloss.

Great blog! I just got back into running this past summer and completed my first 5K last Sunday. I am looking for “more beginner” type races in the Sacramento area (as I currently live in Chico). Do you have any recommendations? I am leaning towards a 2012 goal of completing a 10K. Yikes!

I know of quite a few good ones! Thanksgiving morning there is an awesome Turkey Trot at Sacramento state. Google Run to Feed the Hungry.

In downtown Sac there is usually a “first 5k” the first week of January.

In March there is a 5k in the Shamrock half marathon race, I’m pretty sure?

Also in March there is a fun one called Nutrtion Fuels Fitness. And the Zoo Zoom is in April or May.

If you google any of those names you should find the race websites! Have fun!

And I need to update this blog! Haha

    Hi Holly,

I found your blog through searching EMU/Dietitians. I’m currently taking the prereqs for EMU’s program and was hoping I could speak with an alum!

I would just really like to hear what your experience was with the program and a few other things- so do you have an email? If not just thought I’d try- congrats on becoming a RD!
